Punta del Este, with its many beaches, elegant seaside homes, yacht harbour, high-rise apartment buildings, and glitzy restaurants is one of South America’s most glamorous resorts, extremely popular with Argentines and Brazilians. Celebrity-watchers have a full-time job here. Punta is teeming with big names, and local gossip-mongers keep regular tabs on who’s been sighted where. Day 8 Ilhabela, Brazil
Rising steeply from the narrow strait that divides it from the continent, the 350-sq-km Ilhabela (Beautiful Island) earns its name from its volcanic peaks, beautiful beaches, dense tropical jungle and some 360 waterfalls. Almost 85% of the island has been turned into a park and UNESCO- protected biosphere, which shelters a remarkable profusion of plant and animal life, including toucans and capuchin monkeys. A haunt of pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries, its waters are scattered with shipwrecks, many of which make for excellent diving. The island also proffers jungle hiking, windsurfing and beach-lazing. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 9 Ilha Grande, Brazil
The fabulous island retreat of Ilha Grande owes its pristine condition to its unusual history. First it was a pirates’ lair, then a leper colony and, finally, a penitentiary where political prisoners were held alongside some of Brazil’s most violent criminals. So close to Rio de Janeiro, yet so different, Ilha Grande is now Brazil’s relaxing, undeveloped paradise. Stepping off the ferry to the island is to disconnect from the outside world. No cars, no banks (bring your money!), no ringing phones. It’s all about relaxing in the sun, sailing, swimming, disappearing into spas and re-emerging for fresh seafood at one of the 30 small restaurants. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10 Buzios, Brazil

Buzios is now frequented by discerning visitors who come from all over the world to savour its pristine beaches and crystal clear water. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 11 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

You must also visit the thrilling Corcovado, a mountain 710 metres above sea level, with a sheer granite face topped with the famous Christ the Redeemer statue.
