DAY 1 Depart Australia
Today we board our overnight flights to Rome, Italy.
DAY 2 Rome, Italy
Today we arrive in Rome. After clearing customs, we will be met by our private coach and travel to central Rome. We will enjoy a sightseeing tour of the 'Eternal City' and see the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, where group members can throw a coin and make a wish to return to Rome one day. In the afternoon we will check in to our hotel.
DAY 3 Rome, Italy
This morning we will visit the Vatican Museum, with a wealth of artistic treasures, and the spectacular Sistine Chapel. The afternoon will be at leisure. Tonight enjoy a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of our exciting tour.
DAY 4 Rome, Italy
Today we enjoy a day tour to Tivoli on the outskirts of Rome to visit Villa d'Éste and Hadrian's Villa. Tivoli is home to luxurious residences, magnificent villas, and two famous UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Renaissance palace of Villa d'Este, known for its extravagant, gardens and water fountains, and the ruins of Hadrian's Villa, the grand second-century estate of Emperor Hadrian of ancient Rome. We return to Rome late afternoon.
DAY 5 Rome, Italy
Today we will take a coach to the beautiful town of Orvieto. We will visit the impressive Duomo di Orvieto and the Pozzo di San Patrizio. After a guided walking tour, the afternoon will be at leisure to explore the medieval cobbled streets of the town or enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the many restaurants, cafes, and trattorias. Late afternoon we return to the hotel by coach.
DAY 6 Embarkation
This morning is free for individual exploration. In the early afternoon we are transferred to the cruise terminal. Make sure that you are up on deck as the Celebrity Edge slips her moorings as we commence our 'Medieval Cities of the Mediterranean' cruise.
DAY 7 Catania, Sicily
Today we call in to the island of Sicily. We travel to the famous resort of Taormina, spectacularly located high on a 200-metre-high rocky outcrop, with views to Mt Etna. The town, founded by the Greeks, has an ancient theatre that also overlooks the mountain. We will walk around the medieval centre and see the Terrace Piazza IX April, with its views overlooking Mt Etna and the sea. We will visit Torre dell'Orologio, a restored 12th-century clock tower and the famous Ancient Greek theatre, founded in the third century BC and rebuilt by the Romans at the end of the first century – it is spectacularly sited with views of Mt Etna in the distance.
DAY 8 Valletta, Malta
The capital of Malta, Valletta was founded by the Knights of St John in 1566. Its purpose was to strengthen the Order's position on the island, following the siege of Malta by the Turks in 1565. The sightseeing tour includes visits to St Johns Co-Cathedral and the magnificent Palace of the Grand Masters. We also visit Mdina,Malta's ancient capital and a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island. The afternoon is free to visit Valletta's wonderful museum or palaces.
DAY 9 Day at sea
This is our first full day at sea to explore the fabulous facilities of the Celebrity Edge. This afternoon we invite you to join us for a light hearted session of The Senior Trivia. Please join us to get to know your fellow tour members, test your general knowledge, and have some fun.
DAY 10 Santorini, Greece
Today we have a free day to explore Santorini, known as the "Black Pearl of the Aegean", one of the most spectacular landscapes in Greece and in the world. The traditional villages of the island, built on tall cliffs, offer a breathtaking view over the submerged volcano. They represent the most beautiful island view you have ever seen!
DAY 11 Athens (Piraeus), Greece
Today we call in to the ancient city of Athens, capital of Greece. Today we visit the Acropolis and the Parthenon, built to honour the goddess Athena, still dominating the frantic bustle of modern Athens and one of the wonders of the ancient world. We continue on to see other famous sights of Athens such as the first modern Olympic stadium. We will also have time to explore the Plaka district, a maze of winding streets with shops, café's and restaurants.
DAY 12 Mykonos, Greece
Today we arrive in the scenic Greek island of Mykonos. Mykonos is one of the smallest islands of the Cyclades complex, but is definitely the most famous, thanks to its treasure of natural beauty, rich history and cosmopolitan character combined with plenty of local colour. Chora, the islands capital is spectacular with its narrow, whitewashed streets and white cubicle houses with their tiny balconies, coloured windows lined by bougainvillea and posts of basilicum. We will have a free day to explore the quaint streets of this beautiful island.
DAY 13 Naupilon, Greece
Today we dock in charming Nauplion, picturesquely situated on the rock shores of the Argolic Gulf. This morning we will take a tour of the old town and historic Palamidi Fortress. The afternoon will be spent at leisure for individual exploration of this charming town.
DAY 14 Katakolon, Greece
This morning we visit Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games. The Ancient Greeks flocked here every four years for more than a millennium to celebrate the sacred games dedicated to Zeus. We visit the ruins of the Sanctuary, with its athletic quadrangles, stadium, temples and treasuries; then visit the modern Archaeological Museum, a treasure house of Archaic, Classical and Roman sculptures, including the famous Nike "Winged Goddess of Victory".
DAY 15 Day at sea
A day at sea to enjoy the ship's facilities. You might like to enjoy the resort feel on deck, play some board games in Eden, read a book in the roof top garden, or participate in one of the many activities highlighted in your Daily program. This afternoon join your fellow group members for a game of bingo with prizes for the winners.
DAY 16 Naples, Italy
We arrive in Naples this morning. We have a morning tour of the beautiful resort town of Sorrento with its spectacular views of the Bay of Naples. We then visit the ancient, perfectly preserved ruins of Pompeii, a wealthy settlement of the Roman Empire, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. We will have a guided tour of the ruins of the Forum, the house of the Vetti, a well preserved aristocratic villa and much more.
DAY 17 Rome, (Civitavecchia) Italy. Departure
This morning we arrive in the port of Civitavecchia where we disembark. Our private coach will transfer us to Rome Airport for the flight back to Australia.
DAY 18 Arrive Australia
Tour members arrive back in Australia and the Tour concludes.
