A lover of all things textile and yarn related and an enthusiastic owner of Yummy Yarn and Co, a regional based yarn shop in NSW, on this wonderful tour. During the tour we visit many historic and cultural sights as well as yarn shop visits of course! Robyn has run her eclectic shop for over six years now and is happy to call knitting and crochet her “forever crafts”. Whilst on tour, Robyn will be available to help with crochet or knitting related questions. She is a passionate knitter and crocheter and designs her own patterns. Robyn is a firm believer in sharing as much knowledge as she can with fellow makers. She enjoys the creative journey as much as the finished product and always offers encouragement. Robyn provides both crochet and knitting patterns for Homespun Magazine and we will make one of her designs during the tour.
VIEW ITINERARY DAY 1 Friday 12 September, 2025
Departure
We depart Australia today on a flight to Glasgow
DAY 2 Saturday 13 September, 2025 Glasgow
Cruising Tasman Sea
We arrive in Glasgow today, where we will be met by our private coach
and travel to Yarn Cake, which showcases gorgeous yarn, tools, notions
and accessories. They also have a coffee shop, which sells delicious
home-baked German-style cakes.
DAY 3 Sunday 14 September, 2025
Glasgow
This morning we will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Glasgow. From its humble
beginnings, Glasgow reaped the wealth of the industrial revolution,
shown in the splendour of Glasgow Cathedral and other buildings in the
Merchaant City. From Glasgow Cross we move into the medieval part
of town and Glasgow Green. Here we see the People’s Palace and the
Victoria Fountain, the world’s largest terracotta fountain. The first half our
group will attend a workshop at Woollenflower, a small natural dye and
textile studio, run by Australian-born horticulturist and craftsperson, Julia
Billings. She makes all Woollenflower products by hand with care: dyeing
so that colours last and develop with time. Julia will conduct a workshop
“Introduction to Indigo” for this group in the morning and the groups will
reverse in the afternoon: the group will work with a natural indigo vat and
participants would dye and take away a skein of yarn (about 20-100gm
in total) and use shibori techniques to create simple patterning on silk
fabric. This evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner to meet Robyn and
other tour members.
DAY 4 Monday 15 September, 2025
Glasgow
A day to enjoy the designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This morning,
we visit Hill House, which together with his wife, the well-established
artist Margaret MacDonald, he designed. The house was designed to fit
in with the lifestyle of the Blackie family and every item of furniture, textile
and decorative feature was custom made. In the afternoon we enjoy a
delicious afternoon tea at the Willow tea rooms designed by MacIntosh,
opened in 1903, and now fully restored.
DAY 5 Tuesday 16 September, 2025
Edinburgh
This morning, we travel to Edinburgh, the royal and ancient capital of
Scotland. Along the way, we stop to visit Stirling Castle, which was the key
to the kingdom of Scotland, dominating a vast volcanic rock above the
river Forth at the meeting point between Lowlands and Highlands. During
the Wars of Independence, which were civil wars among the Scots, as
well as a struggle between Scotland and England, the castle changed
hands eight times in 50 years. It was also a childhood home of some
of the most famous people in Scottish and British history, such as Mary
Queen of Scots and James VI of Scotland. Edinburgh is one of the most
beautiful cities in Europe. On our sight-seeing tour this afternoon we see
the ancient Royal Mile with its cobbled streets which forms the backbone
of the medieval Old Town. This leads from the Palace of Holyrood house
(HM The King’s official residence in Scotland) all the way to Edinburgh
Castle. We will enjoy a guided tour of the castle, home to the Scottish
Crown Jewels and the historic Stone of Destiny. Enjoy the view from the
castle that is just simply stunning. Robyn and the tour manager will meet
those wishing to dine together in the lobby.
DAY 6 Wednesday 17 September, 2025
Edinburgh
Today we enjoy free time in one of the world’s great cities. In the
afternoon we visit the Dovecote Studios. It is a world renown gallery and
museum for contemporary art, design and textiles. There is no listing of
their exhibitions at the time of the brochure release.
DAY 7 Thursday 18 September, 2025
Edinburgh
In the morning, we visit Kathy’s Knits, where half the group will enjoy a
talk and slideshow given by Lucy Hague presenting her design process
and inspiration, particularly focusing on the history of Celtic art, while the
other half of the group will have time in the shop. Then we change the
groups around. This afternoon will visit the Ginger Twist. Jess, the owner,
loves yarn and the rainbow colours of natural fibres, so it will be a fun visit.
DAY 8 Friday 19 September, 2025
Edinburgh
Today we travel north to the birthplace of golf, St Andrews, where we
have time to explore. We travel to picturesque East Neuk of Fife with a
visit to the Wooly Brew. They stock a great selection of yarn. We continue
with a visit to the Royal Britannia, the retired royal yacht. The Royal family
loved the journeys they were able to undertake on the yacht between
1954 and 1997. Robyn and the tour manager will meet those wishing to
dine together in the lobby this evening.
DAY 9 Saturday 20 September, 2025
Inverness
Today we travel through the beautiful Cairngorms National Park to
Newtonmore to visit the Highland Folk Museum. In this wonderful outdoor
museum, which is one mile long, we will see an 18th century township just
like those in Outlander, working crofts, houses and trains. We continue to
Inverness, where Robyn and the tour manager will meet those wishing to
dine with the group in the lobby.
DAY 10 Sunday 21 September, 2025
Inverness
We will travel to Loch Ness this morning. It is the largest Scottish loch
by volume; Indeed, experts say that it contains more freshwater than
all the lakes of England and Wales combined! Next, we make the short
journey into bonnie Glen Urquhart, famous for its native woodlands and
wide variety of wildlife, that they support, to visit Urquhart Castle. It is a
magnificent, ruined castle that dates from the 14th century and was one
of a chain of garrisons that controlled the Great Glen. Nowadays it’s a
popular place with “Nessie” spotters who scan the waters of the loch
that are deeper here than the North Sea! We return to Inverness, where
there will be free time to sightsee or browse around the shops including
an opportunity to buy products from the Prickly Thistle Contemporary
Tartan Mill.
DAY 11 Monday 22 September, 2025
Peebles
Our journey today takes us south to the attractive town of Perth, where
we have time to browse. We continue to Galashiels, our home for four
nights.
DAY 12 Tuesday 23 September, 2025
Peebles
This morning we will visit Abbotsford, the extraordinary home of the
novelist Sir Walter Scott, who popularised tartan and re-discovered
Scotland’s crown jewels. We will also have time to explore the wonderful
formal Regency garden surrounding his house. In the afternoon we visit
the New Lanark Spinning Co. Located in a World Heritage Site it has
traditionally spun yarn since 1785 on 19th century machinery. We will be
able to purchase their beautiful wool.
DAY 13 Wednesday 24 September, 2025
Peebles
We travel to Hawick to visit Johnson of Elgin for a tour of the mill, where
all stages of the manufacturing take place. Operating for 140 years now
created a unique range of knitted garments. There will be an opportunity
to buy your favourite product. We continue with a visit to the Border
Textile Towerhouse, where we will learn how the Borders manufacturers
were able to attain the height of luxury and fashion in their products.
DAY 14 Thursday 25 September, 2025
Peebles
Today the group will be split into two and will swap after lunch. You will
enjoy a three hour Introduction to Darning Workshop, hosted by Flora
Collingwood-Norris. This is a relaxed and friendly workshop suitable for
beginners, where you will learn to colourfully darn your knitwear. You
will also learn different approaches to darning, working from the front
and back of your fabric as well as adding pattern to your darning (time
permitting). When not at the workshop, you will visit the Great Tapestry of
Scotland. Alexander McCall Smith had the idea to create a tapestry that
covered the history of Scotland. He recruited Andrew Crummy, the artist
behind the Prestonpans tapestry, to design it. Alexander asked Alistair
Moffat which parts of Scottish history should be included. They were then
ready to create what you will see today.
DAY 15 Friday 26 September, 2025

Today we travel to Skipton to attend Yarndale, an exciting creative
festival, which conducts workshops, gives talks, provides free patterns
and showcases everything related to yarn.
